Material Research Design and Fabrication
Studio Nulam is a material research and design collective exploring the potential of post-consumer plastic as a creative medium.
The aim of the studio is to transform commonly used, discarded plastic items into captivating landscapes by melting the plastic pieces together with the intention of preserving their diverse origins and histories.
Naturally, as Studio Nulam utilizes plastics as a medium for design and fabrication, it engages in the ongoing discourse surrounding the climate challenges of our time. The studio adds to this conversation by advocating a shift in societal perceptions of plastics – from obsolete discarded pieces to treasured raw materials.
Post-consumer plastic is so tightly integrated into our world and existence; we need to re-establish our value towards it.
Considering the consensus among many scientists that we’ve entered the Anthropocene era, where human influence on our planet is irreversible, plastic emerges as an integral part of our environment, akin to traditional building materials like brick and stone. Studio Nulam declares post-consumer plastic a natural resource, extracted from the earth.
With this ethos in mind, Studio Nulam dives into experimentation in material research and fabrication, harnessing the potential of this often-dismissed material sourced from the world’s unavoidable waste. The process begins the moment trash is collected, sorted and processed for fabrication.
Throughout every decision, the items are transformed into something new and unique, something with purpose and beauty to be valued in one’s daily life.
